Vehicle Spotlight: 2002 BMW 325xi

The 3-series has long been revered as a benchmark of automotive alchemy; a precise balancing act of refinement, sportiness and comfort.

The crown jewel of the kidney-shaped grilles

The crown jewel of the kidney-shaped grilles

There are red cars and then there’s a BMW dressed in Electric Red. Photos simply don’t do this flawless paint justice. I won’t fawn over the mint condition of this ride–just stop by and see for yourself.

If ever a vehicle rolls onto our lot that simply exudes excellence, this is it. If you’re a BMW-diehard you’ll call it the E46, while those of you shopping online will just call it a 2002 3-series. But those that drive one know it by its working title: The Ultimate Driving Machine.

Even though the odometer reads north of 80k, the rest of this Beemer doesn’t look a day over 20.

A truly-timeless BMW interior

A truly-timeless BMW interior

While you won’t find much tech inside, you’ll be treated to a well-appointed cabin and thoughtful, teutonic touches–amber gauges (easier on the eyes at night), one-touch windows all around (even a nation devoid of drive-thrus knows the struggle), and 12-way power seats that are evidence that, like most other things, Germans take sitting down very seriously. The gauge cluster even sports an analog gas mileage gauge that shows current mileage. Despite managing an EPA-estimated 26mpg, chances are you’ll be disregarding the real-time feedback this tool offers. The inline-6 simply sounds too good to hold back in the interest of fuel economy.

The MPG gauge swings between 12-50mpg more as a reminder that your gauge cluster is working rather than a driving aid

Once underway, the 3-series’ reveals itself as the epitome of quiet fortitude. Road noise is subdued and the exhaust is perfectly tuned for a sporty, yet hushed note, whether cruising around town or wide-open. The well-dampened suspension keeps both potholes and hairpins drama-free. If you seek more thrill, press the gas in a corner and you’ll discover why BMW insists on engineering a near-perfect front-rear weight balance coupled with rear-wheel drive. Even though this particular vehicle is AWD-equipped (xDrive in BMW-speak), BMW made it a point to bias the system to the rear, resulting in noticeably more responsive cornering and a better road feel.

Lastly, the trunk is commodious and the rear-seat, while tight in overall space, is well-cushioned and set lower than most, thus allowing for better knee and leg-room. A ski bag is integrated into the pass-through to the trunk, elevating this sport sedan to four-seater ski-mobile.The end result is a a true jack-of-all-trades: daily driver, track star and snowcat.

The last soldiers of the 1st Brigade Combat Team are due back at Fort Carson Tuesday, enduring the 3,800-soldier unit’s nine month deployment to Kuwait.

Nearly 250 1st brigade soldiers arrived at the post just before 2 a.m. Monday kicking off a day of homecomings at the post. Monday evening, the post was set to welcome 150 soldiers from the 43rd Sustainment Brigade back from nine months in Afghanistan.

The soldiers from the 43rd headed overseas to close down the American effort in Afghanistan, closing bases and shipping gear home as the military readies for its 2014 pullout after more than 12 years at war.

“The 43rd successfully completed critical engineer projects that included base closures, base transfers and base consolidation,” the post said in a news release. “Their hard work and dedication saved taxpayers more than $600 million.”

The 1st brigade soldiers worked in Kuwait to train America’s allies in the region and acted as a visible sign of America’s dedication to the fractious region.

The troops were on high alert for much of their deployment due to the Syrian civil war and the use of chemical weapons by Syrian strongman Bashar Assad.

The homecomings hit as the post says farewell to thousands of troops headed overseas.

The 2nd Brigade Combat Team is taking over from their 1st brigade comrades in Kuwait, where they’re beginning work at Camp Buehring, in the desert northwest of Kuwait City.

Meanwhile, soldiers in the post’s 4th Brigade Combat Team are wrapping up a massive training exercise in California to prepare them for war.

For the past month, the 4th brigade soldiers fought a simulated war at Fort Irwin in California’s Mojave Desert.

They’ll head overseas in the coming months to join Fort Carson’s 4th Infantry Division headquarters in Afghanistan.

Looking for used Jeep Wrangler trails in Colorado

I just bought a used 2011 Jeep Wrangler 2 years ago from a used car dealership, Springs Automotive Group in Denver. I bought a 4 door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with a hard top, mud terrain tires and a manual transmission. I started checking out Jeep Trails in Colorado and have found a few that I love and wanted to share. I will post my top 2 favorite trails today and then 2 more trails in a few more weeks that i have found to take my Jeep Wrangler in Colorado. I hope you enjoy

1. Colorado Off-Road Extreme – ColoradoOffRoadExtreme

This 800-Acre Jeep Paradise is a huge park for all types of 4 wheel drive vehicles including Trucks, SUV’s, desert cars, dirt bikes, rally cars and much more. There is also a 10 mile off road truck or mud track if you want to get real dirty. It takes me about an hour to get here from Springs Automotive Group in Denver and 2 hours from Springs Automotive Group in Colorado Springs. Parking is $10 for members and $20 for non members. This is definitely a weekend trip getaway.

From I-70: Take exit 328 toward Deer Trail. Turn west on Cedar St, continue approx 0.3 miles to 1st Ave. Turn south on 1st Ave, continue approx 4.9 miles to Co Rd 190. Turn east on Co Rd 190, continue approx 0.1 miles, track is on south side of road.

2. HardScrabble Trail in Eagle County

This hidden gem is a local secret just between Eagle and Gypsum, Colorado. Right in the heart of the Rockies. It is a 8 mile Jeep trail that runs along a steep, rugged ridge and over beautiful terrain that your Jeep Wrangler will be able to take pretty easy. The total elevation is just under 3300 feet. There is some challenging spots, but nothing that your new or used Jeep Wrangler can’t handle.  It’s a pretty good hunting area too, so I would probably stay off during hunting season. Its about 2 hours from my used car dealership in Englewood and closer to 3 hours from Colorado Springs. From Gypsum: Head south on Valley Rd from US-6 approx 0.4 miles to Cooley Mesa Rd. Turn east on Cooley Mesa Rd and follow approx 1.8 miles to Spring Creek Rd. Turn south on Spring Creek Rd and follow approx 1.0 mile. Access is off of Spring Creek Rd.

There are my first Jeep Wrangler trail post and I will post another in a few weeks. Hope you enjoy.

What side is my gas tank on?

Have you ever pulled up to the gas pump, in that new or used car you just purchased in Colorado Springs, only to realize you don’t know which side your gas tank is on? Well, I am here to tell you how to tell which side it is on! Let me start by saying,  as a woman, I do not like to pump gas, but here I am anyway pulling up to the gas pump, trying to jockey my position in line, only to have the car ahead of me pull out and turn around because they either don’t know or simply forgot which side their tank is on!  Here is a little secret a lot a people don’t know about, if you look at your gas gauge, there is a little picture of a gas pump, next to that gas pump, there should be an arrow pointing to the right or left. The direction that the arrow is pointing is the side your gas tank is on! Viola! Now, I am not promising that all cars have the arrow, but if yours does, that is an easy way to tell which side your gas tank is on! Hopefully, this will ease a little of your frustration at the pumps. Sorry, I can’t help with your frustration over gas prices! What do those 3 numbers on your tire mean? 195/70/R15

Do you know what those 3 numbers on your tire mean?  Seems complicated.

Springs Automotive Group Used Car Hints for used tires

Trust me when I tell you that neither did I when I started working in the world of used car dealerships in Colorado.  If you have ever shopped for used tires at any store or online you will see that they are asking for those 3 magic numbers.. Make sure you learn these 3 numbers because these numbers can dramatically effect the performance of your tires.

Just because your car or truck came with 4 new or used tires does not mean that you can’t switch them up. There are lots of things that you can do with your tires to increase the performance of your car.

The 1st number is the width of the tire in millimeters when its fully mounted on the rim but BEFORE you put it on your used car or truck.  The higher the number the more surface traction the tire is getting making it turn better on corners.  You will see Nascar Drivers and Drag Racers have very wide tires.  If you are looking to save on gas and have very little resistance, you would want to have a smaller number. Makes Sense?

The 2nd number is much more confusing, and is actually a ratio for the tire. More of a math question. To everyone except a tire technician, the bigger the number, the better MPG’s and comfortable your ride will be. The Smaller the number, the more sportier ride but may be a little rough. So stay big!  Usually you will see between 40-60 on cars.

The 3rd and last number is the radius of the tire in inches. So if you see R15 (Like in Picture above) It means that your tire is for a 15 inch rim. Generally, the smaller the rim the better miles per gallon you will get but you get worse handling so there is a tradeoff with both of them.

Hope this helps!
